Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve, the tufa towers are calcium carbonate spires formed by interaction of freshwater springs and alkaline lake water. The lake covers some 65 square miles and is over one million years old. It is 2 1/2 times as salty as the ocean and very alkaline. Mono Lake, California.
