Borobudur Temple

Borobudur is the largest Buddhist monument in the world and an official UNESCO World Heritage site. This massive and beautiful complex, built during the 8th and 9th centuries, hosts dozens of stupas and statues of Buddha, and is considered to be one of the great archeological sites of Southeast Asia.

Where: Borobudur is located in Indonesia on the island of Java. The closest major city is Yogyakarta (about 25 miles away). When: You can visit anytime of year. The sunrise tour costs a little extra, but it is definitely the best time to photography Borobudur.

Photography: If you sign up for the sunrise tour, you get access when it is still dark, allowing you to photograph the temple during the twilight with city lights twinkling in the background. Stay around to capture the sunrise when the light is soft and colorful, and pack up before the daylight tourist crowds arrive. Make sure you climb to the top, where the views and architecture are best. Learn more: This site offers a great overview of visiting Borobudur. © Ian Plant
