Interview with Matt Jacob

Writer's picture: Ian PlantIan Plant

Matt Jacob is a portrait and travel photographer based in Bali. His love for travel inspired him to become a pilot, which eventually led to a unique photography career. We talk about his story, as well as the stories behind some of his best photos, in the video below.

Here’s a quote from Matt’s website that stood out to me:

Photography, for me, revolves around perception. It’s about finding something in what could be seen as nothing; not so much about what you see, but more about the way you see it.

To Matt Jacob, photography is a form of communication. His goal is to express his perception and spark curiosity in other people. He loves photographing people because they’re layered and complex, and one of his goals is to capture untold stories of unfamiliar life.

90% of my challenge is getting these authentic people in their locations and environment to pose in a way that I think is pleasing to the eye and that means something a little deeper.

Matt's use of both natural and artificial light is part of what really makes his photos stand out. On a personal level, he aims to be as empathetic as possible when photographing people from different countries. This reflects beautifully in his work; as you can see, his photos have an authentic fine art look to them.

I hope you enjoy watching my interview with Matt Jacob. Don’t forget to check out his portrait and travel portfolio. Last but not least, here is just a sample of Matt's amazing work:
